Market Research with Google. A simple Google search will get you an idea on your target audience to start an online business with. To exemplify, knowing what to look for and how to search it, can help you to target the people interested in your products or services.
Search example: your are selling “Men’s fitness equipment”. Open up Google and type your products niche with paranthesis. Like this - “Men’s fitness equipment”. If we don’t type the paranthesis the results will be for men and/or fitness and/or equipment and will not target the real audience for your product. Men’s fitness equipment without paranthesis search will get us 65,800,000 results but adding paranthesis we will get 54,600 results, which will be your real audience for your products.
The ideal audience size. An ideal audience size should be around 500,000 to 5 million search results. Larger than 5 million audience is very difficult to work with, as your topic is too big so you will have to compete with a lot of online vendors. Since you will be a beginner vendor, you won’t stand a chance against them.
On the other side, 500,000 results is too small for your market and you might not get the income you need to supply your business and your family.
To exemplify our search case, “fitness” will get you 1.4 billion results. Niche is too big, you have to find a sub-niche to work with. 54,600 search results for “Men’s fitness equipment” will not get us where we want. With 1.2 million results, “Men’s fitness” covers a lot more than “Men’s fitness equipment”, but it is within our search paramenters. Great niche to start with.
